  • Baumgartenalp

At the far end of the Glarus hinterland, seven kilometres south of the village of Linthal, in remote Tierfehd, the valley road ends. This is where the romantic mountain trail to the two-plateau alp begins, which can be reached via the Pantenbrücke bridge and Uelialp in just over two hours. Baumgartenalp, with the highest lower plateau in the canton of Glarus, is situated at 1602 metres above sea level. This fabulously remote cultural landscape is the work of centuries of effort by our ancestors, who wrested meadows and pastures from the scree slopes and rocky deserts of the Alpine region. The Baumgartenalp can rightly be described as a paradise in the Alps. According to the Glarner Heimatbuch (1965), the Baumgartenalp is one of the most beautiful spots in the Glarnerland. Nowhere else does the Tödi, this royal mountain, show itself in such majesty.

Tourists who are sure-footed and used to the mountains can also reach the Baumgartenalp via the exposed path over the Tritt, which leads over steep rock faces to the alp after the Obbort mountain inn. The automatic aerial cableway operated by the Linth-Limmern power plant, which opened in 2019, takes just a few minutes to reach the Chalchtrittli mountain station, from where it takes half an hour to descend to Unterstafel.

Mettmen-Alp (near Schwanden)

  • Berghotel Mettmen

The Berghotel Mettmen is situated on the Mettmen-Alp in the Glarnerland, at 1600 m above sea level, in the middle of the Freiberg Kärpf. You can reach us either on foot via various hiking trails or by cable car Kies-Mettmen. You can reach the valley station of the cable car Kies-Mettmen either via the 6 km long mountain road by private car (sufficient free parking available) or by the Mettmen bus. Tip: Park your car in Schwanden and get to the valley station safely and without stress with the Mettmen bus.

The new Berghotel Mettmen is located on the remote Mettmen alp high above Schwanden. To access the hotel one must drive or take a bus from Schwanden to the Kies-Mettmen cable car which will then whisk visitors up to the hotel. The Mettmen alp is known for being a gateway to the Freiberg-Kärpf, Europe’s oldest game reserve, established in 1548 by Canton Glarus Landammann Joachim Bäldi. The new hotel is minimalistic in design both inside and out. The exterior’s wood paneling sits firmly on a stone base. The interior is similarly unfussy. Each room has expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. The view to the north reveals the villages of Mitlödi, Glarus and Ennenda far below. The hotel is the realization of a dream of Romano and Sara Frei-Elmer. Prior to opening the Berghotel Mettmen, the Romano and Sara operated the SAC’s Leglerhütte mountain shelter.
